The scenery around the San Luis Reservoir was almost from another world. Everything was so green and lush we had to get a closer look. Making a split-second decision my wife and I veered off the road to take a peek at the next lookout point. 

The only problem was that our stopping point was directly behind a steep hill that blocked some of our view. So, we decided to climb the hill to get a better view. 

In our excitement we didn’t even look to see how steep the hill was. It was Billy goat steep. As we climbed and climbed and climbed we wanted to quit, quit, quit. 

Thankfully we didn’t. Because when we got to the top it was amazing and worth every painful step we took to get to the top. Even though the picture doesn’t do it justice we were glad we didn’t quit. 

Have you ever wanted to quit halfway up? Maybe you’ve even wanted to quit before it ever started.

Hebrews 12:1-3 

Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Do you want to know what the secret sauce is to not quitting? It’s fixing your eyes on Jesus. He endured the cross so that when you look at him you won’t quit because he didn’t.

Philippians 4:12-13

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

I love this verse because it reminds us that there is never a hill so steep that we can’t climb through Jesus. The secret to being content is to get your strength from Jesus, not your circumstance. This is one of the key six verses on not quitting.

Philippians 3:13-14

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

This verse is the Apostle Paul’s version of ‘don’t let the door hit you on the way out’ when it comes to our past. For many, it’s what’s holding them down from reaching the top and achieving all God has for them. You don’t belong to your past you belong to God’s future for you. That’s your goal, that’s your prize!

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore, I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

What you do matters for eternity. So, run God’s race like it’s hanging in the balance. Discipline your mind and body to follow Jesus and never look back.

Isaiah 40:29-31

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

No doubt there are times in our lives when we get tired. Dog tired. God promises when we put our hope in him our strength will be renewed. 

Galatians 6:9

So, let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

The law of sowing and reaping is taught all through the Bible. This verse is no exception. It clearly tells us that if we continue to sow what is good we WILL reap a blessing. That’s a promise and that’s why it’s a powerful addition to these six verses on not quitting.
