When my wife Laura and I decided to start Fusion Christian Church in late 2006 we were really excited. We knew it was going to be amazing. So, we packed up the kids, moved to Temecula, Ca. and launched the church in 2007.
Little did we know it was also going to be the launch of our country’s Great Recession and the “subprime mortgage crisis.” It was an awful time full of uncertainty.
It was so bad that in a period of two years we were forced to move three times because the houses we were renting foreclosed. We ended up losing our deposits and struggled to find a new place. People were losing their homes left and right and rentals were hard to come by.
At one point about 80% of our church was either unemployed, facing foreclosure or filing for bankruptcy. It was brutal and everyone was wondering how to deal with the uncertainty of it all.
Have you ever been there? Maybe you’re reading this today and uncertainty has been plaguing your life and you’re desperate for some stability. If so, I have good news for you.
There’s hope even in the midst of uncertainty.
Here are three truths to give you hope as you learn how to deal with uncertainty in your life.
1. God ALWAYS has a GOOD plan.
Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve just wondered ‘God, do you really have a plan in all this?’ Yep, me too!
The good news is he does, he always has and he always will. Even better is that it’s a good plan according to Jeremiah 29:11.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
You might not feel very prosperous and hopeful right now don’t panic. God’s not done yet. His plan is to prosper your future with hope. Maybe you should memorize this verse today.
2. God NEVER forsakes his children – That’s you!
Do you know what kinds of people forsake their children? Wicked people do. God is different, he’s not wicked. He is righteous. That means he physically cannot forsake his children because it would go against his character.
History proves this in Psalm 37:25.
I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
Do you know why this verse is true? Because never, in all of history, has God ever forsaken his children and he’s not going to start doing it now. Not even in times of uncertainty.
In fact, God said,
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
He’s with you. Now let it sink in.
3. God is ALWAYS good at directions.
It can get confusing can’t it? Knowing which way to go and what decision to make. We struggle because we don’t want to make it worse and dig ourselves a deeper hole.
Our problem is that we rely way too much on our own understanding. We base our circumstances on what we see instead of on the God who is unseen.
Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us how to deal with that.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
This verse gives us two powerful words on how to deal with uncertainty. Trust and seek. If you trust him and seek him he will direct you. He’s really good at that. In fact, he’s perfect at it.
