Investing Your Life

Investing Your Life

The average person in America each day spends about two and a half hours on social media, three hours watching TV, and about an hour and forty-five minutes playing video games. If you add all of these, you would spend about seven hours and fifteen minutes glued to a screen daily. That’s over a hundred and ten days every year.

It’s crazy to think we spend so much time on things that don’t last. They are only momentary fixations that stimulate our endorphins, making us falsely believe we’re living a meaningful life.

But while entertainment isn’t inherently bad, the question is: are we investing more in things that fade than in things that last?

The greatest use of your life is to invest in something that will outlast you. To my knowledge, no one has ever been on their deathbed and said, “Gosh, I wish I could have spent a few more hours on Instagram.” Or, “I wish I could have finished my castle on Fortnite.”

What people really want to know is whether their lives matter.

If you want your life to matter, invest it into things that matter for eternity. Here are two things you can invest your life in that really matter.

1. Invest Your Life into Winning People to Jesus

If you want to let people know you love them, care about their eternity. Jesus told us to “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.” (Mark 16:15)

This takes intentionality. You must choose to invest your life into changing the eternity of others. The best way to do that is to introduce them to Jesus.

2. Invest Your Life into Caring for Those in Need

If you’re an American, you’ve won the lottery and sit among the wealthiest people in the world. According to the World Bank, almost half of the global population lives on barely six dollars a DAY. That’s poor!

When you start actively investing in and caring for those in need, it’s a sign that you love God.

The Bible says, “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” (1 John 3:17-18)

There is need all around—you just have to be willing to see it and do something about it.

James 1:27 teaches us that “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

The world corrupts us by fooling us into believing that life is about us. It’s not. That’s why a life selfishly lived is so unfulfilling.

If you want your life to matter, start investing it into things that matter. Care about the eternity of others. Do something about their needs.

At the end of your life, will you be proud of where you invested your time?

Start today—choose eternity over momentary distractions.

Think it Over:

  • Where is most of your time being invested? Are you spending more time on things that fade or things that last for eternity?
  • Who in your life needs to hear about Jesus? How can you intentionally invest in sharing the Gospel with them?
  • What is one practical way you can care for someone in need this week? How can you show God’s love through action?
