21 Days of Prayer – Day 7

21 Days of Prayer - Day 8

How to Pray – Part 4

Fun fact. Jesus never taught us to pray, “My will be done.” But if you listened to a recording of most prayers, it might sound like it. He actually teaches us the exact opposite.

He said, “Pray like this… May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

To pray for God’s will is to ask God’s purpose to reign supreme. We know how serious of a prayer this is because Jesus even prayed it.

Just before Jesus went to lay down his life for us on the cross, he prayed for God’s will, not his. He said, “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” (Mark 14:36)

It should encourage us to know that even Jesus prayed for the Lord’s will in his life.

Praying God’s will sets us up for unselfish prayers. It aligns our hearts and minds with God’s heavenly purpose. We all know how easy it is to have selfish prayers. We need to avoid this at all costs.

James 4:13-16 tells us, “Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.”

So here’s my challenge to you today. As you pray, align yourself with God’s will. Tell God you want his will for your life, not yours. Tell him you want his answers to your prayers, not yours.

Tell him you want his will in your life as it is in heaven.

Day 7 Prayer Verse:

“Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:15

Day 7 Prayers:

  • Make God’s will your central prayer today.
  • Ask God to reveal his purpose for your life.
