21 Days of Prayer - Day 8

How to Pray – Part 2

As we talk to God in prayer we must remember one important thing.

God and Jesus are not swear words.

Jesus specifically talked about how to handle the name of God in prayer. He said, “Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.” (Matthew 9:6)

This takes us to the next step of learning how to pray: “May your name be kept holy.”

To be holy means to be set apart. When you pray, it’s important to remember that God is set apart from all sin, worldly thinking, and all authority. “In him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)

Do you know what this means? It means the priority of your prayers shouldn’t be you. It should be the holiness of God.

It means coming to God and saying, “Lord, before I ask you for anything, I want your name to be kept holy in my life. I want my prayers to honor you and to be free from sinful intent or worldly perspectives. May you be glorified in my time of prayer.”

God is our heavenly Father and, through Jesus, we have free access into his throne room to ask whatever we wish. But remember, he is completely holy, and he wants our prayers to keep that in mind.

As you pray, remember what God did for the name of Jesus.  “God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)

Wow, what a name! It is the name of complete authority and holiness and it should never be taken lightly. There is no more important name than the name of Jesus. Our prayers should revere his holy name in honor and glory.

Day 5 Prayer Verse:

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11

Day 5 Prayers:

  • Pray that the name of Jesus would be kept holy in your life.
  • Pray for someone you know to come to know Jesus.
  • Pray for our services this weekend. Ask God to do a mighty work in the lives of his people.
