21 Days of Prayer – Day 4

21 Days of Prayer - Day 8

How to Pray – Part 1

Today we start answering the question: How do we pray?

It’s the same question the disciples asked Jesus. They said, “Lord, teach us to pray.” (Luke 11:1)

Have you ever asked that?

After seeing the amazing power Jesus had in both word and deed, they started to connect the dots. They noticed that prayer preceded every amazing thing Jesus ever did.

The disciples could have asked Jesus to teach them all sorts of things. They could have said, “Lord, teach us to be great preachers” or “Lord, teach us to be successful in business” or “Lord, teach us to turn water into wine.” But they didn’t.

They asked one of the single most significant questions next to “Lord, how can I be saved?” They wanted to know how to talk to God.

Jesus gladly answers with the single greatest lesson on prayer ever taught. As we go through this, I want you to remember an important truth. Jesus didn’t teach this as a repetitive prayer. It’s a principled prayer. In it He teaches us how to best align our prayers with the will of God.

In answer to their question, Jesus said, “Pray LIKE this: Our Father in heaven.” (Mathew 6:9)

Step One: “Our Father.”

This is your first step in any prayer.

You must recognize who you’re praying to. You’re praying to your Father. This is not just some guy. It’s the Father who created you, cares for you, and sent his Son to die for you.

This should give you great peace knowing you’re bringing your prayers to a loving Father.

He’s the one who’s “loved you with an everlasting love.” (Jeremiah 31:3)

Step Two: “In Heaven.”

Always remember where God resides. He is not from this world. And he does not act like he is nor does he answer our prayers from a worldly point of view.

He is heavenly, and we are worldly.

He is the creator, and we are the created.

He is sinless, and we are born into sin.

He is spirit, and we are flesh.

Let your prayers begin by reminding yourself who you’re talking to, the God of heaven and earth and Father of us all.
